It was something we had hoped for and prayed over for nearly three years, so by the time we got the positive test, we were both overflowing with relief. By that point in June, we had already received our save-the-date and formal invitation to Jack and Jill’s wedding.

Jack and Jill had been tight with Greg since their college days at Ohio State.

When Greg and I started dating seven years ago, the four of us clicked immediately. We took annual cabin trips to Hocking Hills, split takeout on Friday nights, and helped each other move apartments. When we shared our pregnancy news with them later that summer around week twelve, they were over the moon. Jill actually cried happy tears on my shoulder, and Jack clapped Greg on the back hard enough to leave a mark.

Their wedding was set for early December at an old stone country club just outside Columbus. By the time December rolled around, I was right at twenty-four weeks, nearly six months along. My bump was clear and round. There was no hiding it under winter coats or loose sweaters. Jill had texted me the Tuesday before the ceremony to check in. She told me she had already spoken to the venue coordinator to make sure I had a padded chair near an exit, a steady pitcher of ice water, and that the kitchen staff would have whatever I needed.

She wrote, “We just want you comfortable, mama.” It was thoughtful and sweet, exactly the kind of friend Jill had always been. It certainly was not a secret.

We arrived at the venue around three in the afternoon for the four o’clock ceremony. Greg parked our sedan near the side entrance so I wouldn’t have to walk across the icy gravel in my low block heels. We walked into the warm, timbered foyer, took off our heavy coats, and checked our names off the guest register.

We had barely taken three steps toward the cocktail lounge when a woman in a floor-length burgundy satin gown stepped directly into our path. Her dark hair was pinned up with crystal clips, and she held a matching burgundy shawl tightly around her forearms. Her name was Megan. I recognized her from photos as Jill’s cousin and one of her four bridesmaids, though we had never met in person.

She did not smile or say hello. She reached out, caught my elbow with two fingers, and guided Greg and me toward a narrow alcove under the grand staircase, just out of earshot of the greeting table.

“Listen to me,” Megan said, keeping her voice low and sharp. “If you try anything today to steal focus from Jill, I will throw you out myself.”

Greg blinked at her. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me,” she whispered, her eyes cutting straight down to my emerald green velvet dress, resting directly on my belly. “Today is about Jill. It is not about you, and it is not about your condition. If you make a scene, you’re gone.”

I was so taken aback I could barely get air into my lungs. “Megan, right? I think there’s a misunderstanding. It’s no secret that I’m pregnant. Do you want me to go find Jack?”

“No,” I said quickly, catching his sleeve. “Jack is getting ready. It is an hour before the ceremony. We are not bothering the groom over an overzealous cousin.”

I tried to shake it off, telling myself Megan was just stressed. Weddings make some people lose their minds, especially bridal party members who think they are guarding the President. I took a seat in the back row of the ceremony chapel, sitting on the padded chair Jill had thoughtfully requested.

The ceremony was gorgeous. Jack looked at Jill like she was the only person on earth when she walked down the aisle in lace. During the vows, I felt our baby kick firmly against my ribs, and I smiled, resting my hand over my stomach. Across the altar, Megan stood in line, her chin raised. Her eyes flicked toward me, and her expression hardened into a glare so intense it made my neck warm.

After the vows, guests moved into the ballroom for drinks while the wedding party took photos outside in the courtyard. Greg brought me a club soda with lime and a small plate of bacon-wrapped figs. We stood by a high-top table talking with two of Greg’s old fraternity brothers, laughing about old road trips.

A few minutes later, an elderly woman in a lavender knit dress, Jill’s great-aunt Martha, noticed my dress. She walked over with a wide, warm smile.

“Well, look at you,” Aunt Martha said, gently touching my forearm. “When are you due, sweetheart?”

“Late March,” I said, keeping my tone gentle and conversational. “We are very excited.”

“First one?” she asked.

“Yes, our first,” Greg answered, grinning proudly.

Before Aunt Martha could say another word, Megan materialized beside the table. She didn’t look at Aunt Martha. She looked straight at me, her jaw clenched.

“I warned you,” Megan whispered, loud enough for Greg and Martha to hear. “You’re doing it on purpose. You’re holding court.”

“She asked me a simple question, Megan,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “We are standing here quietly having a soda.”

“You chose that tight dress on purpose,” Megan hissed. “Jill has been crying in the bridal suite for weeks about how everyone is going to be looking at your baby bump instead of her gown. You’re trying to ruin her wedding.”

PART 3

The accusation was so wild that Greg actually set his beer bottle down hard on the table. “Jill told her that? Jill literally texted my wife three days ago to make sure she had a comfortable chair.”

“Jill was being polite because she’s too sweet to tell you the truth,” Megan snapped, crossing her arms. “She cried to me on Tuesday night after she sent that text. She said you were showing off and that you couldn’t stand not being the center of attention. Now leave before I have the venue security escort you out.”

Aunt Martha took a step back, her mouth slightly open. Several nearby guests turned their heads toward our table.

My chest felt tight, but I refused to let Megan see me cry. I opened my small velvet clutch, pulled out my phone, and unlocked the screen. I opened my message thread with Jill.

“Here is the text Jill sent me on Tuesday at 4:15 PM,” I said, holding the screen up for Megan to read. “‘We just want you comfortable, mama. Let me know if you need anything else from the kitchen.’”

Megan didn’t even look at the phone. “Texts don’t mean anything. She told me what she really felt. Get your coats.”

“No,” Greg said firmly. “If Jill wants us to leave her wedding, Jill can tell us herself. I’m not walking out on my best friend based on your word.”

Greg walked straight past Megan, heading down the hallway toward the holding room where the wedding party had just finished their formal pictures. Megan gasped and tried to follow him, but I kept right behind her.

Greg knocked once on the door of the private room and pushed it open. Jack was loosening his bow tie by the mirror, and Jill was sitting on a plush sofa, laughing while her maid of honor unpinned her veil.

“Greg?” Jack asked, turning around with a surprised smile. “What’s going on, buddy? Everything okay?”

Megan pushed past Greg into the room. “Jill, I told you I’d handle it. They are out in the cocktail hour showing off her stomach and gathering a crowd, and when I asked them to be respectful, they caused a scene.”

Jill’s smile vanished. She looked from Megan to Greg, and then her eyes landed on me standing in the doorway. She stood up immediately, gathering her train in one hand.

“Megan, what are you talking about?” Jill asked, her voice dropping.

“You told me on Tuesday,” Megan insisted, her voice getting higher. “You said she was going to steal your thunder with her baby news, so I told her if she made a spectacle, she had to go.”

Jill stared at her cousin in complete disbelief. “I never said that. Megan, are you insane?”

The room went dead silent.

“You said you were stressed!” Megan sputtered, her cheeks turning blotchy.

“I was stressed because the florist lost half the centerpieces on Tuesday!” Jill said, stepping past her cousin and walking straight toward me. She took both of my hands in hers. Her hands were warm and shaking slightly. “Laura, I never said that. I swear on my life. I love you, and we love this baby. Jack and I were just talking about how happy we were that you felt well enough to make the drive.”

ENDING

Megan stood frozen in the center of the bridal suite. Her hands dropped to her sides, the arrogance completely draining out of her face.

Jack stepped forward, looking at Megan with a cold, sharp disgust I had never seen on his face before. “Megan, you need to go sit at your assigned table in the back. If you say one more word to Laura, or to any of our guests, you won’t be finishing the reception.”

Megan didn’t answer. She pulled her shawl tight around her shoulders, kept her head down, and slipped out the side door of the bridal suite into the hallway.

Jill pulled me into a tight hug, pressing her cheek against mine. “I am so, so sorry,” she whispered. “Megan has been looking for drama since the bachelorette party. She made everything about herself all week. I had no idea she would corner you.”

“It’s okay,” I told her, letting out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for two hours. “We just needed to know it didn’t come from you.”

“Never,” Jill said firmly.

We walked out into the reception hall together. Jack made a point of coming over to our table right after the first dance, pulling up a chair between Greg and me, and toasting our baby with a glass of sparkling cider.

Megan sat at the bridal party table across the room. She barely picked at her roasted chicken, avoided eye contact with everyone, and slipped out of the venue right after the cake cutting, long before the dancing even started. Nobody went after her.

Greg and I stayed until nearly ten o’clock, laughing with our college friends and enjoying the music. On the drive home, as the heater hummed and the snow began to fall over the quiet highway, I rested my hand on my belly. Our baby kicked once, soft and steady. In that moment, surrounded by the quiet dark of the car, all the ugly noise from the afternoon simply faded away, replaced by the deep, uncomplicated peace of knowing exactly who our real friends were.

PART 1 My husband, Greg, and I found out we were expecting our first baby early last June.
