Diego leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Robles, this is Diego Salazar, counsel for Dr. Robles and the clinic. Your card has been flagged for possible unauthorized payment tied to a non-spousal cosmetic procedure. We will also be preserving all communications related to the patient\u2019s use of Dr. Robles\u2019 personal image.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alejandro cursed.<\/p>\n

Then he remembered himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cDiego, be reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am paid to be precise, not reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renata wiped her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe knows about the photo, Alejandro.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe knows you sent it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still nothing.<\/p>\n

That silence did what no apology could.<\/p>\n

It confessed.<\/p>\n

I picked up the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome home tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

His relief was immediate.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course. We\u2019ll talk. I can explain everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou misunderstand. I don\u2019t need an explanation. I need you to pick up the clothes I\u2019ll leave by the front gate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/p>\n

Renata stared at me.<\/p>\n

For the first time since she arrived, she looked less like a rival and more like a girl standing barefoot in the wreckage of a man\u2019s lies.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you really not know he was married to the doctor?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew he was married. I didn\u2019t know it was you. I didn\u2019t know he used your clinic. He said he hated plastic surgeons. Said they fed women\u2019s insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

The hypocrisy was so perfect it had teeth.<\/p>\n

Renata whispered, \u201cHe told me he was leaving you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said the house was basically his.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said your clinic was built with his family money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teresa actually laughed then.<\/p>\n

Sharp, loud, offended.<\/p>\n

I looked at Renata.<\/p>\n

\u201cI built this clinic before I married him. Every floor, every machine, every license, every salary. Alejandro owns nothing here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renata sat down slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me you needed him.\u201d<\/p>\n

That one hurt.<\/p>\n

Not because it was true.<\/p>\n

Because he must have needed to believe it.<\/p>\n

I stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen carefully. Alejandro will now tell you I trapped him. He will tell you I am cold. He will tell you I embarrassed him. He will tell you you were special, but I ruined it. Do not mistake his panic for love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renata looked up at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you telling me this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause today you were cruel. But you were not the architect.\u201d<\/p>\n

She began crying again.<\/p>\n

This time, quietly.<\/p>\n

I turned to Teresa.<\/p>\n

\u201cCancel the procedure. Refund nothing until billing review. Provide Miss Renata with discharge paperwork stating no procedure was performed. Offer referral to counseling if she wants it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renata looked stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to\u2026 do anything to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a surgeon. Not a butcher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n

That was the mirror she deserved.<\/p>\n

Not a ruined face.<\/p>\n

Her own shame.<\/p>\n
