The little boy buried his face against the cook\u2019s apron, trembling so hard the cook could feel it through the fabric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpen that door,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cook stepped forward, blocking the boy completely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou heard him,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s not yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the boy whispered from behind the cook, \u201cHe took my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diner went cold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman at the counter covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man pulled his hand out of his coat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t a weapon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a photo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s mother was in it, tied to a chair, holding a handwritten sign with the diner\u2019s address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cook\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because behind the woman, barely visible in the corner of the photo, was an old tattoo on the kidnapper\u2019s wrist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same tattoo the cook had seen twenty years ago on the man who killed his brother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cook looked at the boy, then back at the man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice was quiet now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou picked the wrong diner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, headlights filled the windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three trucks pulled in through the rain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s calm face finally cracked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cook leaned closer and whispered, \u201cMy family owns this whole street.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The waitress turned the lock with shaking fingers.
