The doctors said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d the boy interrupted, voice shaking. \u201cI heard you on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone turned to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed at the bottle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou said if she got better, he\u2019d change the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blind girl gripped her cane with both hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMommy said the drops were medicine,\u201d she whispered. \u201cShe said if I told anyone I could see shadows, Daddy would send me away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father looked like the words had physically hit him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would never send you away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut she said you only loved me because I was helpless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother stepped back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat boy is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not. I was hiding because I wanted to tell someone. She saw me through the window yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father turned slowly toward his daughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou saw him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl nodded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI saw his blue jacket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence fell over the patio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother had built a prison out of pity, medicine, and lies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father reached for the bottle, but his hand shook too badly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother\u2019s face hardened through tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause when she was sick, everyone looked at me like I was a saint.
