He said if she loved you, she\u2019d stay away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man covered his mouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His father had died owning every version of that lie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The younger boy looked down at the pedal car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMom said you bought this before we were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man stared at it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He remembered buying it the day Emily told him she might be pregnant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had laughed and said, \u201cThen our kid deserves the fastest car on the block.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older boy pushed the cash back toward him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re not begging,\u201d he whispered. \u201cWe\u2019re selling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He closed the boy\u2019s hand around the money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re not selling the first gift I ever bought my sons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both boys went still.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The younger one whispered, \u201cSons?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked from one child to the other, his voice breaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf your mother lets me\u2026 I\u2019d like to stop being a stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older boy\u2019s guard finally cracked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s really sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen take me to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The younger boy still held the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut the car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man gently touched the red pedal car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re taking it home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the first time, the boys didn\u2019t look like they were losing something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They looked like someone had finally found them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The man took the photograph with shaking fingers.
