She is my mother, not yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ben turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why does she shake when you walk into a room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruth\u2019s son flushed with anger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s unstable. That is exactly why I\u2019m taking control of her property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He grabbed the legal papers and shoved them toward her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruth flinched again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, Ben caught her shaking hand before it reached the pen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, Mom,\u201d he said gently. \u201cYou don\u2019t sign anything while you\u2019re afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word\u00a0<em>Mom<\/em>\u00a0shattered what little strength she had left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She began to cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her son slammed his palm onto the counter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t get to call her that! Where were you when she was sick? Where were you when she needed someone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ben\u2019s eyes filled with pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLooking for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His brother reached into his leather vest and placed a worn metal lunch tin on the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lid was dented and faded, but Ruth recognized it instantly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had once packed it with four sandwiches and a note written in blue ink:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You boys matter.
