A chill ran through me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe won\u2019t hurt her again,\u201d the officer added.<\/p>\n

Silence filled the room.<\/p>\n

Heavy\u2014but this time, not with fear.<\/p>\n

With relief.<\/p>\n

She reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you I\u2019d pay you back,\u201d she said, handing it to me.<\/p>\n

Inside was the same $100\u2026 plus more.<\/p>\n

I shook my head immediately. \u201cYou don\u2019t owe me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I do,\u201d she said firmly.<\/p>\n

Then her voice softened.<\/p>\n
