PART 1

“Tomorrow, as soon as I sign, the company and the accounts will once again be in the hands of the family,” my brother Kendrick said.
His voice sounded so calm that for a second I thought I had misunderstood everything. I was lying face down under the bed in a luxury suite in Palm Springs, my cheek pressed against the soft carpet and my knees drawn up to my chest. I had planned a silly prank for the night before my wedding: pretending to go out, hiding in the dark, and listening to what my brothers would say when they thought I was gone. I had imagined quick laughter, some friendly teasing about my wedding nerves, and then my triumphant reappearance from under the bed frame.
“Austin always signs without reading,” Jackson replied with a cold chuckle. “You put family protection on the cover page and he does not even ask a single question.”
I felt my initial enthusiasm turn to solid ice in an instant. For eighteen long years I had paid university tuition, settled mountain of debts, covered medical treatments, paid rent, and funded two completely failed business ventures for them. I had bought my mother a grand estate in Phoenix, financed Kendrick’s upscale bistro, and hired Jackson at my refrigerated shipping company even though he barely knew how to operate a basic spreadsheet. I never considered any of it a sacrifice because I truly believed they were my family.
“The real problem is Gemma,” Kendrick said, his tone turning cautious. “She actually checks the financial numbers.”
Gemma Stafford, the brilliant woman I was scheduled to marry the very next afternoon, was an accomplished architect who ran her own prosperous firm. She did not need my money at all, and the very first thing she did when I met her was ask if my young sons, Samson and Shane, were genuinely comfortable with our relationship. My relatives always treated her with forced, strained smiles and venomous phrases disguised as polite concern.
“We can easily do the same thing with her that we did with Naomi,” Jackson replied smoothly.
Naomi was my ex-wife, and our marriage had ended after endless years of toxic arguments, mysterious anonymous messages, and sudden deep suspicions that always surfaced right when we tried to reconcile. I had spent years believing that Naomi and I had simply destroyed each other through mutual flaws. Crawling under that bed made me realize that someone close to me had deliberately fueled every single fire.
“Gwen was sending Naomi fake screenshots for months,” Jackson continued without a hint of guilt. “You were constantly telling Austin that Naomi was planning to take the boys away from him forever, so they both spent small fortunes on aggressive lawyers while we charged massive fees for helping them navigate the mess.”
I had to cover my mouth tightly with both hands so I would not make a sound.
Kendrick let out a sharp, dry laugh that echoed in the quiet room.
“Austin craves peace so badly that he never stops to ask who keeps stealing it from him,” Kendrick added.
Then they began discussing a confidential laboratory report, a secretive paternity test, and a dark secret that they believed could utterly destroy my emotional stability. They claimed that one of my precious boys might not be mine, and that Gwen held the original medical document in her possession. My fingers began to tremble violently against the floor because I did not know which child they were talking about, nor did I even know if the story was real.
“That way we will force him to obey every single command,” Jackson said with quiet maliciousness. “If Gemma refuses to sign our agreement, we will plant a subtle seed of doubt in her mind because Austin always chooses his children over any woman.”
Kendrick leaned in closer and lowered his voice significantly.
“Tomorrow she will not be in any position to resist us either,” Kendrick whispered.
“Have you already obtained everything we need for the plan?” Jackson asked.
“Gwen arranged the entire thing carefully,” Kendrick explained. “A spiked drink, a few strong pills, and a hotel room booked under another man’s name, so if Gemma does not cooperate, it will look like she completely lost control at her own wedding.”
The blood pounded furiously in my temples as the terrifying realization set in. It was no longer just about stealing my money, as they were actively planning to drug my fiancée and fabricate a massive scandal to break us apart.
Something small rolled quietly across the carpet until it stopped right in front of my face, revealing an ivory envelope with Gemma’s name written by hand. I instantly recognized the distinct handwriting of my sister Gwen, the woman to whom I had entrusted my sons for years.
The mattress suddenly sank down directly onto my back. One of my brothers slowly leaned down toward the edge of the bed frame, and I realized he was only seconds away from discovering me.
PART 2
Kendrick’s shadow completely filled the narrow space under the bed frame, making me stop breathing entirely. I watched his thick fingers slide down toward the carpet, resting so close that I could clearly make out the jagged scar on his right hand. Right at that critical second, his cell phone began to ring loudly.
“What is wrong, Gwen?” he answered impatiently, sitting up abruptly on the mattress.
My sister’s frantic voice sounded extremely panicked on the speaker. I could only pick up a few chaotic phrases about my cell phone being completely turned off, my room being empty, and the boys constantly asking where I was. Jackson muttered that I was probably just downing a drink at the hotel bar. Kendrick cast one last suspicious glance back toward the bottom of the bed, but he ultimately followed his brother out into the quiet hallway.
I waited several long minutes before carefully crawling out from under the bed to open the envelope. Inside lay an electronic room keycard, a clear photograph of Gemma walking into a local pharmacy, and a handwritten note containing precise instructions.
“Two tablets in her glass before the main toast,” the note read. “Take her up to room 314, take clear pictures, and call Austin immediately afterward.”
I did not scream in anger, nor did I recklessly confront them in the hallway. I quickly photographed every single piece of evidence with my phone and checked the secondary device I had left recording for my harmless prank, finding the entire sinister conversation saved smoothly in the audio file.
I immediately called my trusted corporate lawyer, Alexandra Ross, and urgently asked her to drive down from San Diego. Then I ordered my company’s chief of security to instantly remove my boys from Gwen’s house and deliver them safely to Naomi’s residence, instructing him that no family member was allowed to alter the driving route under any circumstances.
I walked down to the hotel bar and spotted Kendrick and Jackson casually pretending to watch a soccer match on the screens. I walked right up to them, hugged them warmly, and offered a calm smile.
“I just went for a long walk to settle my wedding nerves,” I told them casually.
“Tomorrow your true peace finally begins, brother,” Kendrick said while patting my shoulder affectionately.
“I certainly hope so,” I replied softly.
At midnight, Gwen knocked softly on my suite door and walked in with her familiar protective sisterly expression. She quickly assured me that Samson had overheard Gemma discussing my private bank accounts, insisting that she only wanted to protect me from another painful heartbreak. It was her signature manipulation tactic of planting a small doubt with soft affection so that I would let my paranoia do the rest of the destructive work.
“Thank you so much for letting me know,” I said calmly.
Her tense body relaxed instantly, and before leaving the room, she hugged me tightly and whispered a warning directly into my ear.
“Just remember that blood never betrays you,” Gwen whispered.
