PART 1

“Come on, Serena. I want everyone to see what is left of you after I left.”
The audio message from Damian Rawlins arrived at 8:17 p.m., while Serena Quinlan was getting ready in front of the mirror in her apartment in Atlanta. She did not answer, choosing instead to just stand there and listen to his voice fill the room.
“Don’t worry about wearing an expensive dress because nobody expects that of you. After the divorce, I suppose you have learned to live with much less.”
Brooke, her trusted assistant, clutched a thick leather folder tightly against her chest as she watched her employer.
“You don’t have to go to this event at all. This isn’t a genuine invitation, it is clearly a trap meant to embarrass you.”
Serena picked up the elegant ivory envelope from her vanity desk. The party was scheduled to be held at a massive gated mansion in Miami, where Damian had invited top hotel owners, prominent society journalists, high-profile investors from San Diego, and mutual acquaintances who had vanished the moment he started claiming that she was left empty and kept only by her foolish pride.
In one bottom corner of the invite, almost hidden beneath gold foil, Serena caught sight of the Helios Capital logo and smiled slightly.
“He doesn’t know,” she murmured softly.
“What doesn’t he know?” Brooke asked, stepping closer to the vanity.
“He chose the worst possible scenario to make fun of me,” Serena replied.
A fresh notification flashed across her phone screen with another message from Damian: “Don’t be late tonight, because pity also has a strict schedule.”
Brooke took a very deep breath to calm her rising anxiety.
“Let Malcolm handle this entire situation for you instead.”
Serena carefully capped her deep crimson lipstick and looked up.
“Malcolm isn’t going to speak for me tonight. He is going with me as my partner, which is a completely different thing.”
At ten minutes to nine, a sleek black SUV pulled up right in front of her apartment building. Malcolm Foster stepped out first, looking remarkably composed in a tailored dark grey suit.
“Do you still want to do this entirely your way?” he asked as he opened the door for her.
“I want Damian to choose every single word he uses against me tonight,” Serena said as she slid onto the leather seat.
The coastal mansion gleamed under dazzling outdoor lights, surrounded by manicured lawns, bustling valet attendants, and glowing crystal lanterns. Damian was standing near the main entrance with Paisley Abbott, his new girlfriend, who looked striking in an exquisite navy blue gown.
When Damian spotted Malcolm walking beside Serena, his arrogant composure vanished for a fraction of a second. Then his eyes drifted to Serena, who was descending the stone steps in a simple white dress, her effortless composure far more unsettling than any loud display of wealth.
“What a surprisingly generous appearance, Serena,” Damian said with a smirk. “I almost thought you wouldn’t have the courage to show your face.”
“You insisted so persistently that it would have been quite rude of me not to come,” she replied smoothly.
Paisley offered a polite, somewhat artificial smile.
“You look quite different tonight, Serena. Much more simple than before.”
Serena touched her modest necklace gently and locked eyes with her.
“Some people easily confuse simplicity with a lack of courage, Paisley.”
Damian let out a loud laugh that echoed too forcefully across the foyer.
“You still know how to speak beautifully, Serena. It is just a real shame that poetic speeches don’t actually pay your daily bills.”
He then practically paraded her around the grand living room, displaying her like a broken trophy from his past life. Near the grand piano, a wealthy socialite leaned over to whisper to her friend, remarking that Serena was merely the desperate ex-wife who ended up with nothing.
The chief event coordinator walked up to the group, but the moment his eyes landed on Serena, he stopped dead in his tracks.
“Dr. Quinlan, I had no idea that you would be joining us tonight,” he said nervously.
He immediately fell silent, but the formal title had already escaped his lips, causing Damian to frown deeply in confusion.
“Doctor?” Damian repeated, looking back and forth between them.
“The world of business is much smaller than it looks, Damian,” Serena said calmly.
The coordinator bowed his head slightly to show his complete respect.
“Everything is officially ready as you requested earlier, ma’am.”
An heavy silence fell over the surrounding crowd like a massive stone, causing Paisley to grip her champagne glass tightly while Damian forced a smile that no longer carried any genuine certainty.
A few minutes later, Damian stepped onto the elevated wooden stage set up in the inner garden to address his guests.
“Friends, tonight we gather to celebrate the glorious future of the Croft Group and our shared ability to leave behind certain stages and certain people,” Damian announced proudly into his microphone.
Paisley chimed in loudly from the edge of the stage, ensuring everyone heard her voice.
“Not just anyone possesses the magnanimity to invite their ex-wife after everything she has lost.”
Serena took a smooth step forward toward the stage light.
“Sometimes losing something isn’t a tragedy at all, Paisley. Sometimes it is just a necessary cleansing.”
Damian immediately walked down the steps, his eyes hardening with frustration.
“Be very careful, because that arrogant tone really does not suit your current situation,” he warned in a low tone.
“You invited me here so everyone could see what was left of me,” Serena said quietly. “The truth is that they haven’t seen anything yet.”
Right at that moment, her assistant Brooke approached her hurriedly with a pale face and whispered in her ear that Helios Capital had officially confirmed that their legal representative was on his way inside.
Damian overheard part of the whisper and smiled, entirely failing to grasp the gravity of the statement.
“That is perfect news, so let him right in. Now the real business of the night can finally begin.”
Serena did not move an inch, nor did Malcolm. Nobody in that crowded room could have possibly imagined what was about to unfold.
PART 2
Damian genuinely believed that the financial backing from Helios Capital was about to save his crumbling enterprise, but the quiet confidence surrounding Serena began to slowly erode his composure.
The Croft Group desperately needed that signature, as its luxury hotels in Phoenix, Denver, and Dallas had been quietly accumulating massive debts for months, even while Damian continued to project an image of an untouchable family empire.
“Let us move this conversation to the private conference room immediately,” Damian ordered his staff, adding, “I don’t want any further public interruptions.”
He then turned his head to glance dismissively at his ex-wife.
“You can come along and sit quietly inside, Serena. Maybe you will actually learn how successful professionals conduct real business.”
Serena walked quietly behind him without saying a word, while Malcolm leaned down slightly toward her ear.
“He is about to attempt to close a multi-million dollar deal without having any idea who is actually sitting on the other side of the table,” Malcolm observed.
“Damian has always signed legal papers without taking the time to truly read the people around him,” Serena whispered back.
The private conference room featured a massive mahogany table and floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering a sweeping view of the garden. Damian proudly took his seat at the head of the table, with Paisley occupying the chair to his immediate right, while Serena calmly pulled out a chair along the side without asking for anyone’s explicit permission.
“I don’t believe this high-level meeting was intended for sentimental guests who have no stake in the outcome,” Damian remarked coldly.
“Then it is a very good thing that I didn’t walk into this room because of any lingering feelings,” Serena replied instantly.
Paisley let out a soft, mocking laugh from her side of the table.
“We all know that you only brought Malcolm along tonight so you could feel vaguely important once again.”
Malcolm rested his hands firmly on the back of his chair and looked directly at Paisley.
“Be extremely careful not to confuse genuine professional companionship with public charity,” he said sternly.
“And you should be equally careful not to confuse professional charity with personal romance,” Paisley retorted quickly.
The harsh blow caused a wave of uncomfortable murmurs to ripple through the legal teams present in the room. Serena felt the insult cut deep like a sharp splinter, but she refused to lower her steady gaze.
Damian immediately seized the opportunity to control the narrative.
“When we went through our divorce, I acted like a complete gentleman and never spoke a single bad word about her in public.”
That statement was an absolute lie, because for two full years he had painstakingly constructed an elegant lie regarding their separation. In affluent circles across San Francisco, he claimed that Serena was emotionally unstable, while in financial hubs across Charlotte, he insinuated that she was desperately chasing money she could not comprehend, constantly telling his partners’ wives that she simply could not handle a high-profile lifestyle.
Brooke suddenly stepped through the double doors carrying a sleek digital tablet and a manila document folder.
“Excuse me, Dr. Quinlan, but our lead legal team is requesting immediate confirmation regarding the reputational conduct clause,” Brooke announced clearly.
Damian’s chief attorney immediately looked up from his legal pads with a puzzled expression.
“What reputational clause are you talking about?” he demanded.
“The mandatory clause that allows the immediate suspension of all financial negotiations if any party uses the transaction to defame, manipulate the press, or publicly degrade third parties,” Brooke explained smoothly.
Paisley instantly stiffened in her seat, while Damian glared sharply across the table at Serena.
“What kind of ridiculous theater are you trying to pull here?” Damian snapped.
Serena picked up the tablet from Brooke and slid it across the glass surface. On the screen was a newly drafted digital article titled: “Prominent Businessman Appears with Wealthy Companion at Exclusive Party; Calculated Comeback Suspected.” Right beside the headline were verified text messages sent directly from Paisley to a prominent tabloid journalist, suggesting brutal public headlines such as “kept woman,” “sponsored comeback,” and “an ex-wife’s pathetic revenge.”
