PART 1

“Dad, Mr. Christopher gave me some juice that tasted just like medicine, and then he told me not to say a word to anyone,” seven year old Chloe whispered softly.
Brandon felt his fingers slipping against the slick leather of the steering wheel. He had just picked up his daughter from her very first overnight stay at the home of Mason, a second grade classmate. Ever since Brandon arrived at the house, something about the whole situation felt deeply unsettling.
Christopher, who was Mason’s father, had opened the front door before Brandon even had a chance to ring the bell. Right behind him stood Chloe, clutching her bright purple backpack tightly to her chest. She did not run to hug her father, nor did she mention having any fun, and she did not even say goodbye to young Mason.
When Brandon gently placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, he noticed that the little girl shuddered nervously.
“They are probably completely exhausted right now,” Christopher said with a calm tone. “The kids stayed up way too late watching movies together, but you know how children are, so we should definitely do this again real soon.”
Chloe kept her eyes lowered toward the ground and remained silent.
Ten minutes later, as they drove down the road inside the truck, she suddenly began to cry quietly. It was not a typical child tantrum, but rather a deep and silent weeping, as if she had been desperately holding it back for hours.
“What happened back there, my sweet girl?” Brandon asked softly.
She immediately clutched her lower stomach with both hands. “It hurts a lot right here, Dad.”
Then she began to speak about the glass of juice. She explained that Christopher had served it to her in a very special glass, that it tasted extremely strange like bitter flowers mixed with medicine, and that Mason did not receive the same drink. She also admitted that she had thrown up during the early morning hours, but she kept quiet because Christopher warned her that he would get very angry if she made a big scene.
Brandon immediately stopped asking her any more questions. He knew that pressing a terrified child for answers could easily do far more harm than good, and he also recognized when a medical situation was truly urgent.
He quickly dialed his wife on the phone. “I am heading directly to the emergency room with Chloe, so please do not come over just yet, and I will call you back the moment I learn something.”
His wife, Samantha, heard the serious terror in his voice and decided not to argue with him.
At the emergency room of Saint Anthony Medical Center, a attentive nurse escorted young Chloe into an examination room right away. Forty minutes later, a doctor stepped out into the waiting room accompanied by two law enforcement officers.
“Mr. Miller, we discovered cardiac glycosides in her system, which is consistent with poisoning from a highly toxic plant,” Dr. Lawson explained grimly. “Your daughter arrived just in time, so she is definitely going to recover fully.”
Brandon could barely gather enough breath to speak. “Did you say she arrived just in time?”
Dr. Lawson held his gaze with a somber expression. “If you had waited just a few more hours, we would be having a completely different conversation right now.”
That was the exact moment when the lead officer stepped forward to ask who had prepared the beverage.
Brandon responded immediately with a full name. “Christopher Bennett prepared it.”
As he uttered those words out loud, something dark and ancient flickered back into his memory. Seventeen years ago, while studying psychology at the university in Minneapolis, Brandon had crossed paths with another man named Christopher Bennett. It was the exact same person, featuring that terrifying smile that never quite managed to reach his cold eyes.
Suddenly, Brandon remembered a female student named Hannah, who used to show up to class with severe bruises hidden carefully beneath long sleeves. He recalled helping her file the official report, securing the restraining order, and witnessing the abuser’s sudden expulsion. He vividly remembered the chilling look Christopher gave him on the day he lost his scholarship, his academic career, and his entire reputation.
Brandon felt a brutal chill run down his spine. This horrifying scheme had not started just last night, but rather seventeen long years ago. If Christopher had waited all this time just to target his daughter, Brandon could not even imagine what else the man had planned, and he could hardly believe the terrifying truths he was about to discover.
PART 2
At the police station, Brandon laid out every single detail of their shared history.
Hannah had been Christopher’s girlfriend during their university years. After enduring months of intense jealousy, total control, and physical abuse, Brandon accompanied her to file a formal report with the police. Several other women stepped forward to speak out as well, which ultimately led to Christopher being expelled. Some time later, Brandon and Hannah shared a brief romantic relationship before life eventually pulled them in different directions.
Later that night, upon returning home from the hospital, Brandon decided to look up her name online. He discovered that Hannah had passed away three years prior at the age of thirty-eight. A local newspaper article stated that she was found lifeless inside her apartment, apparently dying from sudden poisoning, and the case was closed without any signs of foul play.
Brandon stood completely motionless in front of the glowing screen. Poisoning was the exact same word used by the doctor earlier that evening.
Two days later, he received an unexpected phone call from a woman named Lauren, who was Christopher’s ex-wife.
“I saw the news reports regarding your young daughter,” Lauren spoke in a low tone. “I desperately need to share something crucial with you before he manages to find you first.”
Lauren had known Hannah back in the day, and she had also testified against Christopher. Years later, after becoming convinced that he had genuinely changed his ways, she married him and gave birth to Mason. However, the emotional isolation, strict control, and constant fear quickly returned to ruin their home.
“When I finally attempted to leave him,” Lauren explained nervously, “I discovered several hidden notebooks filled with detailed notes about dangerous poisons, symptoms, and methods to make a murder look like natural causes.”
Brandon closed his eyes tightly. “Did you take that information straight to the police?”
“Yes, I did, but he claimed those were just reference notes from his executive job in the pharmaceutical sector,” Lauren replied. “Nobody could prove otherwise at the time, so I secured primary custody of Mason while Christopher retained basic visitation rights.”
Then Lauren uttered a chilling sentence that instantly changed everything. “Brandon, he never truly forgot about you, and he would constantly bring up your name whenever he was angry, swearing that one day he would take away what you loved most.”
