PART 1

3:00 a.m.
The entire city was silent, except for the ambulance siren tearing through the darkness.
I rushed into the emergency room, my heart pounding.
My mother-in-law, Teresa, grabbed my hand tightly, her voice trembling.
“Clara, Julian is in critical condition! The doctor says he needs surgery immediately. Sign the papers!”
The surgical consent form was forced into my hands.
I looked down at the preliminary diagnosis.
But before I could sign…
My eyes stopped on someone standing behind the hospital bed.
A young woman wearing an expensive trench coat.
Serena Hale.
Julian’s new project manager.
The woman my husband had been with inside her private apartment just hours before he suddenly collapsed.
“Clara!” my father-in-law, Arthur, snapped. “This is a matter of life and death! What are you waiting for?”
I looked at the pen in my hand.
Everyone thought I was frozen because I was afraid.
But they didn’t know…
I was thinking.
I placed the pen down on the nurse’s counter, pulled out my phone, and opened the initial test results.
“Arthur, don’t sign yet.”
My voice was so calm that the entire hallway went silent.
“Look carefully at Julian’s results before deciding whether he should undergo major surgery. Potassium 2.8. Sodium critically high at 158,” my voice echoed clearly. “This is not a pericardial effusion. It’s severe hypokalemia and hypernatremia.”
Arthur leaned closer to the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
Teresa stopped crying.
Then Serena stepped forward.
“What gives you the right to make a diagnosis?” she asked coldly. “You’re not even a doctor.”
I slowly looked up at her.
For the first time that night, I smiled.
“Who told you I wasn’t a doctor?”
The emergency room fell completely silent.
Serena froze.
The clipboard slipped from Arthur’s trembling hands and hit the floor.
Every person in the hallway turned toward me.
I looked at the nurse.
“Notify the cardiology team to pause the surgical preparation. The patient’s condition needs to be reassessed immediately.”
The nurse stared at me for a few seconds…
Then turned around and rushed back into the trauma room.
I knew I had just changed everything.
But what they didn’t know was…
Those test results wouldn’t just save Julian.
They would also reveal the real reason he ended up there at 3:00 a.m.
And the person who was truly afraid now…
Wasn’t my family.
